“I Survived Breast Cancer”

The rate of breast cancer survival is increasing because of early detection. Although more women are being diagnosed with this disease, they are surviving it from finding the lump early.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure took place on Sunday October 4th athe Universsity of Nevada, Reno campus and more than 4,500 people attended the event to either participate or just support loved ones.

Skin cancer is affecting million of Americans each year and UNR student Amy Tesar came to find that she was one of the million diagnosed with cancer at age 14.

“I tanned four times a week. My friends worked at a tanning salon so they would always let me tan for free. After awhile I started to notice a dark spot on my ear, but I didn’t think anything of it. So I waited about a year before I ended getting it checked out. That’s when I discovered it was Basil Cell Carcinoma.”

Tesar dealt with BCC at a young age and went through many surgeries to get rid of the cancer. At age 21 her ear is clear of cancer and even free form scarring.

“If I could do it all differently I would. But now I don’t tan as much anymore. Only before vacations so I won’t get burnt.”

BCC is the most common type of skin cancer. These cancers arise in the basal cells…the deepest layer of the epidermis which is the top layer. Almost all basal cell carcinomas occur on parts of the body excessively exposed to the sun — especially the face, ears, neck, scalp, shoulders, and back.
